Greater Manchester has yet another film festival: Bury Film Festival.

In the evening of 8th July 2026, Bury Film Festival took place in The Box located within The Met, right in the heart of Bury Town Centre. The intimate occasion featured 10 short films – split into two blocks of five – with an intermission and guest speaking contribution from CourtsWrites bang in the middle.

Both blocks of shorts showcased a wide variety of filmmaking produced locally within Greater Manchester, and across the neigbhouring counties of the North, as well as token additions from down south and the US. In producing a programme that blended drama, comedy, surrealism, and animation, the sell-out crowd – featuring both the Mayor and members of Bury Cine Society in attendance – were treated to a thoroughly entertaining spectacle.

Being Billy, created by MancMade Productions, featured Con O’Neill as the titular character, a Falklands veteran living with PTSD. The standout of Bury Film Festival, Being Billy is an excellent short film. The performance of O’Neill, and the atmosphere present, go hand-in-hand in establishing something both special and important.

Overall, this first addition of Bury Film Festival was a brilliant success. A full crowd, faces young and old, all enjoying a multitude of independent cinema. A promising start for the future of Greater Manchester’s latest film festival.
